The past few days have been pretty bad weather (mau tempo). bringing heavy rain and strong winds all across Portugal. Atlantic storm Elsa made her presence known on Thursday, we had trees down, roads blocked and flooding all over the place.

There has been a serious lack of rain throughout the country this past year but it seem that nature is trying to make up for that by sending it all at once.

We had significant water ingress to the new house, pouring through gaps in the gable end, down the walls inside, across the ceiling and entering the middle of the room via the light fitting. The deluge was such that it simply flowed in under the kitchen door and the back doors. Luckily we are not living in the house yet, and only one wooden toolbox was affected.

There is much to be said for tiling the entire ground floor.

And, of course, it gives me a big clue about what work needs to be done to try and make the place watertight. Although our plot of land is on the hillside fortunately we have the railway station as a buffer so the likelihood of being flooded or being swept away is quite slim. Some of our colleagues have not been so lucky. Now storm Fabien is on her way and who knows what the next couple of days will bring.
