Just a week after the new floor/ceiling was finished, the concrete is nicely cured and we are ready to commence work on the new walls in the upper level.

The first batch of materials is on order and we are awaiting delivery.

During the meantime, the work downstairs in the dungeon can continue. We still have the old water/wine tank to remove and a section of the concrete step level at the back to take away.

Why am I not surprised that the tank is probably the most stubborn part of the structure to demolish? Definitely on a par with the walls upstairs.

It took some serious effort but now the tank is gone thanks to the trusty big wrecking bar kindly left behind by the previous owners.

And the concrete slab has been reduced to the size for the proposed larder/storage room.

Now, once again, we have a huge pile of rubble to donate and a lot more earth and rocks to dig out in order to bring the floor to a useable level, around 40cm below the level of the existing concrete floor slab.

The existing concrete floor slab was not done by us ...

... nice try, not even close.

But we are not too worried about that for a room which will not be used for living.

Archeological evidence

Under the section of concrete slab which has been removed we found a large stone slab which looks like slate. Also, the walls in that corner of the room are burned black under the flaking white paint and crumbling render. We suspect that this is where an open hearth was used for a fire, no doubt for heating and possibly cooking when the original small building was being used many, many years ago.
