With the inevitable delays and then an extra week taken while Janet and I were in Lisbon for a short Portuguese course, the kitchen (first phase) was finally delivered and installed.

Although the build quality is equally as good as the main kitchen there are a couple of annoyances.

Almost two weeks later the granite countertop was delivered and installed to complete the kitchen.

But all is not so great ...

Macambi, in their wisdom, changed the widths of some of the kitchen base units without advising us of the change.

We intend to install a mini-bar fridge but planned for a future where we might wish to install a full under-counter fridge. For this eventuality, we specified a standard cabinet width of 60cm. The whole kitchen base is 200cm wide (80 + 60 + 60) and it seems logical to use standard cabinet sizes. However, they decided to make the fridge space smaller by 5cm (for the mini-bar) and the centre cabinet 5cm wider to accommodate the difference. This means that we are now not able to fit a normal fridge in the space without making significant changes to the whole unit. Very disappointing.

In addition to the kitchenette, we had two large storage cupboards made for the bathroom.

One in the corner.

And one under the stairway next to the shower.

Sadly, once again, Macambi decided to change the specification without telling us.

We requested cabinet widths of 80cm but they made them wider. The designed width was on purpose so that we could 'hide' the irregularities of the walls which are neither plumb nor square.

The installers had a difficult time getting the cupboard under the stairs into a position that did not highlight the faults. The task would have been much simpler if the unit was the correct width, the trim pieces would have been wider, easier to cut, and would have made the fit and finish look much better.

Nevertheless, the final result is that we are nearer to having a fully functioning guest suite and it all looks good in the end.
