As predicted, Friday started fairly clear and a little chilly but there is no rain in the forecast.

The work continued on the stairs, setting the riser points and fabricating the wooden boards for each step face.

There was some adjustment needed to get the slope of the baseboard correct but a large lump hammer and the stone breaker made short work of that.

The stairway design is a little complex, getting it right is obviously important and we do know the blasé style that goes with construction here, our house is a testament to that but it has character and is definitely unique.

By lunchtime, the upper part and the 3-step kite 'turn' had been set in position with just the six lower steps to do.

After a huge lunch of soup and bread followed by whole chicken legs (two each), potatoes, ratatouille, spinach, and a large wedge of pudim all washed down with local wine, we returned to the job.

Once the final step boards had been set in place the concrete was poured in, lots of concrete! Now it has the entire weekend, and possibly more, to cure.

It is all a bit slap-dash and makeshift but that's how it goes here. Everything is made from odds and ends of timber found laying around - back in the UK we would have to pay for all new timber, cut exactly to size and carefully fabricated to the job. Good job I wasn't really expecting that here.

It is quite exciting to know that we do have stairs now, even if they are not yet finished and usable.

With still some of the day remaining they moved on to the next stage for the columns at the driveway entrance.

Pre-cast concrete square collars stacked up around the steel cores which will be filled with concrete after the structure has dried. (I will have to put covers on them if the rain returns 😆)

By now, the sun is going down.

All in all, a good result after a short working week.
