Even though the weather has really dampened things down, the delivery of materials makes us think that we are on the way forward with the project.

Whilst demolition is great fun, the construction is the exciting part.

The guys have been hard at work, laying the concrete beams/joists to support the new floor. Moving the pieces around completely by hand, no crane or hoist in sight. These pre-stressed concreted beams are about 7m long and obviously weigh a lot.

The floor construction is an array of inverted ´T´ beams with concrete inserts forming the basic structure then a covering of concrete will bring it to finished level.

The original granite stone construction for the lower part of the building has walls which are about 60cm thick, that is the ledge shown in the image above. The new floor will be fused into this when the concrete is poured, hopefully this will make the structure extremely rigid but most importantly the floor will be flat and level.

Next, laying down a couple of hundred concrete fillers.

    • Yes, the power/lighting will all be incorporated into the false wall cavities. I´ve allowed for at least 10 circuits in the upstairs area. For the downstairs part - when we get there - it should not be too difficult to install with surface trunking because we will try to use the exposed granite wall on most of it. Still haven´t finalised the plan for downstairs until we are sure that we can feed into the drainage.
