As part of my surprise birthday trip, we were based in Sedan, France for a few days.

After returning from the cemetery at Fleigneux we enjoyed a day out in the town itself.

Sedan is an old town with a rich history, much of which is based around the castle in the town.

We decided that a visit to the castle would be nice and made the walk from the hotel. Once we arrived at the castle it was difficult to see where the entrance was, we ended up walking a huge spiral around the entire site to eventually find a sign directing us to the entrance.

After watching the obligatory, introductory video outlining the history we embarked on the tour. The construction is quite impressive, starting as a single tower it has been enlarged and built over and around for more than 500 years. Its usefulness as a fortress was recognised by the occupying Germans in the second world war who took over the site following the Battle of Sedan in 1940.

The castle was returned to the people of Sedan in 1962 and has been undergoing repair since then. There is now also a hotel complex within the walls of the castle as well as an extensive museum.

A few of the images around the castle.
