Janet bought a small fig tree sapling about 18 months ago and we planted it in the garden, as you would expect.

It was barely more than a twig with a couple of leaves and it withered a little before the first Winter, but it survived.

We fed it with manure and this year it began to show more leaves and new small branches. Earlier in the year, it developed a fruit, just a small fig at one of the branch tips. Unfortunately, with the exceptionally dry Spring and Summer that fruit died off and dropped.

However, with good watering, a new fruit appeared and this one grew quite quickly. Following the recent rains, it grew even larger and during this week has been getting softer and changing colour.

It was clearly quite ripe so we picked it today.

Only a couple of spoonfuls, but tasty all the same.
