With a very slow start to the work this year we have actually made some progress.

The ceiling of the new downstairs area (dungeon) has now been painted.

Being bare, new cement render, the surface is both rough and very absorbent. The initial two coats of diluted primer simply disappeared into the cement, as expected, so a third coat of neat primer was needed, followed by two coats of quality matt white paint.

The new walls of the kitchen and bedroom area will be a colour other than white so these have been left with just the primer finish.

Finally, we have some sunshine to brighten up our days and begin drying out the whole area, as well as providing beams of light through the air dust.

With the ceiling lights re-fitted the whole place is much brighter.

We ordered and collected the new granite step for the main door, quite a heavy slab at 30mm thick and slightly more than 1500mm x 600mm. It took a bit of ingenuity to maneuver it into position but with the aid of a palette and some wooden wedges, it became a fairly easy one-man job.

It took just a few minutes to measure and cut out the notches to fit around the door frame and then set it onto a cement bed. Then I had to re-position the 'repair' panels on the old doors for a neat fit near the new step. That should keep out the cats and bigger rodents.

The new door set and small windows have been ordered and should be installed within a couple of months.

In the meantime, the tiles for the floor and the bathroom walls have been ordered. These have a much shorter lead time and we expect delivery within the next week.

Next major job - installing the floor.
