Having travelled so far for a great day out at Badoca Safari Park, it would have been a shame to drive back home without seeing more of the area.
We had breakfast, checked out, loaded the car, and headed to Sines, about 15km further down the coast from Vila Nova de Santo André.
Sines is a small town on the peninsula, however, it is a large petrochemical port.
Driving into the town past the giant storage tanks and large pipelines is reminiscent of Immingham docks, Humberside, but on a smaller scale.
We parked off the main coast road and explored the coast, but there was little to see at that level except the sea and sand.
The town itself is high on the cliff above the beach, and there is, of course, a castle to explore.
Some houses have been built right up against the side of the castle walls.
As expected, the view from the castle across the bay is ideal for defending against attack by sea, long before the artificial harbour had been created.
The canons would warn off any invading navy long before they could reach land.
All roads wind up the hill to the town.
A view of the town from one of the causeways. We walked out to the lighthouse just to see where it was.
